Whaley House

Whaley House was built in 1857 and is the oldest brick two-story structure south of Monterey. This Greek Revival-style home was the family home of Thomas Whaley, a New York native who came to San Diego hoping to capitalize on the gold rush.

It was the meeting place of San Diego`s elite and was known for being one of the most beautiful houses in Southern California. It was also used as a courthouse, granary and store.

This prestigious property has been called America`s most haunted house by Travel Channel`s “America`s Most Haunted”. Tours of this historic site are a popular destination for both tourists and locals alike.

Legend has it that ghosts haunt the property and continue the legacy of Whaley`s family. Some have reported hearing heavy footsteps and smells of sweet tobacco smoke, while others have seen ghosts inside the house.

Swimming Pool for Children

Located below the bluffs at the northern edge of La Jolla, Children`s Pool was conceived as a safe swimming area for children by local philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps. To protect young swimmers against dangerous crosscurrents, she funded the construction a concrete bend breakwater.

Children`s Pool was a popular swimming area in the 1930s. However, the area was soon taken over by seals and sea lions.

People now visit the beach to see harbor seals and sea-lions play, bathe and give birth to their pups. This has led to a heated debate between animal rights advocates and those who want the beach to remain as an area for children to swim in.

Although the seals have largely taken over the beach, it`s still open to the public June to November. You can enjoy a relaxing day by the ocean, soaking up the sun while chatting with the seals and watching the waves crash.

Sea Wall

Riprap and sea walls are used to protect the coast from erosion and reduce the impact of waves. These structures can be found along the coast close to many homes and blufftops in San Diego.

These devices can cause beach erosion in certain cases, and they are generally banned by the Coastal Commission and environmental groups. These devices are often built by homeowners on public land, which effectively transforms beaches into private property.

In Oceanside, a local resident is asking the Coastal Commission to approve a seawall for his property. He is worried about the erosion of his shoreline due to rising tides.

The Coastal Commission should approve a seawall to fill the gap at 245 Pacific Ave. This seawall is located at the end of an eroding seawall, which also protects dozens more homes throughout the city. In September, the Coastal Commission refused to grant his request. It stated that the gap of 50 feet would have to be filled in.

Mission Bay

Mission Bay, the largest man-made water park in the United States, is surrounded 27 miles by meandering shoreline, with many waterways, inlets, and islands. It`s also home to a multitude of beach communities and is perfect for water sports, sailing, camping and more.

The bay`s 27-kilometer shoreline is home to approximately twenty sandy beaches. Eight approved swimming areas are also available. Windsurfers and water skiers can also find plenty to do at the west end, where a network of channels and islands awaits them.

Alternatively, you can walk and cycle around the bay on lovely multi-use paths or enjoy water views from bridges and parks. SeaWorld San Diego is a great option for families with children. It`s just a short drive from the hotel and offers a variety of amazing shows and encounters with marine animals.

Mission Bay is a popular spot for all ages, including seniors and young children. The many boat operators in the area make it a great place to try your hand at sport fishing.
